Tornado abruptly touches down amid overnight Central Texas storms
A tornado briefly touched down in southern Hays County at 1:20 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, with radar data showing it made contact on the southern edge of Wimberley. It was reportedly on the ground for about five to 10 minutes.
The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Hays County around 1 a.m. Thursday, covering San Marcos, Kyle, and areas near Wimberley. According to CBS Austin, the storm left behind a trail of minor damage, including downed tree limbs, overturned trash cans, toppled signs and fences, and a few knocked-over mailboxes.
County officials report only minor damage and no serious injuries. Although several hundred residents experienced power outages earlier this morning, most service has since been restored, with only a few customers still without power in Hays County as of 8:45 a.m., according to Pedernales Electric Cooperative.
The NWS issued a flash flood warning that has now expired as of 5 a.m. Thursday morning in Hays County, including San Marcos, Kyle and Buda. Residents are instructed to check the Hays County Emergency Services website for information on road closures and weather risks.
